Each Panzer Brigade and Panzergrenadier Brigade was supported by its own Panzerartillerie Bataillon (Armoured Artillery Battalion) equipped with M109G Panzer-haubitze (armoured howitzer). These were refitted US M109A1 self-propelled guns with a new muzzle brake, improved breech, panoramic telescope and armoured targeting scope.
